The problem it addresses: Before a trip you have to jump between the highway bureau, the weather agency, maps and tide sites to piece one decision together.

OmniRadar(山海路全方位雷達)是給台灣騎士與戶外玩家的出發前儀表板。

What it is

OmniRadar is a pre-trip dashboard for riders and outdoor people in Taiwan. Roadside cameras along mountain roads, surf and tides at the coast, and temperature and sunrise on high mountains are gathered on one page together with live weather data. It is an independent data-aggregation service. It is not a navigation app and not an official road-safety assessment.

Why we built it

Before a trip you often open several tabs: the highway bureau for roadside cameras, the weather agency for temperature and rain, a map for the route, and separate sites for tides and waves if you head to the coast. Information is scattered and the go or no-go decision is hard to make. OmniRadar puts the deciding information in one view so you spend less time switching between sites.

What you can do with it

  • Roadside images: choose a route and the cameras along it are listed by distance, so you do not have to find them one by one on a map.
  • Weather data: temperature, rain and wind from the nearest station next to the images; the coast and mountain zones add tides, wave height, UV and a sunrise countdown.
  • Signal lights: "suitable", "caution" and "not recommended" mark sections to watch, with the reason written out instead of a colour alone.
  • Rider reports: signed-in riders can report rockfall, slippery roads and accidents, which other riders confirm and which expire automatically.
  • Three zones: mountain roads, ocean and alpine, each with data and judgements suited to the situation.

How to use it

Checking a mountain road before leaving, for example:

  1. Choose your route and look at the cameras along it, along with the update time shown on each image.
  2. Compare the temperature, rain and wind beside them, and pay attention to rain accumulated over the last hour or two.
  3. Read the signal light and the reason it gives, to see which section is marked "caution" and why.
  4. Check the highway bureau separately for live road closures and restrictions.
  5. Decide whether to go based on the conditions on site and your own judgement.

Design decisions

  • Keep the layers of data apart: official observations, site estimates and rider reports are labelled separately, so you can see who produced each number.
  • Estimates only move toward caution: for example, the road wet/dry estimate only gets corrected toward "wetter", and does not claim "dry" just because the rain stopped.
  • No judgement from stale data: each page shows its observation or update time, and data older than three hours is not used for a judgement.
  • No unconfirmed "normal traffic": live closures are not connected automatically, so the site never shows a normal-traffic message. Rely on the highway bureau's announcements.

Technology and data sources

  • Live images: the Directorate General of Highways, the New Taipei City Transportation Department, and live streams from national parks, scenic areas and the Forestry Agency. Images are loaded by your browser directly from the source and are not stored or relayed by the site.
  • Weather and astronomy: the Central Weather Administration's temperature, humidity, wind, rainfall, UV, buoy wave height and sea temperature, tide forecasts, and sunrise and sunset.
  • Road restrictions: announcements from the Directorate General of Highways. Fixed restrictions are compiled by hand with the verification date noted.
  • Maps and routes: OpenStreetMap contributors and terrain elevation data. Climb and descent are estimates.

The full sources, update frequencies and licences are on OmniRadar's data sources page.

Limitations

  • It is not a navigation app and gives no route guidance.
  • Signal lights and estimates are reference values computed from data. They do not represent official closure, disaster or reopening announcements.
  • Stations are not on the road surface, cameras and stations can go offline or be delayed, and temperature and rain in the mountains can differ a lot.
  • Do not use the site while riding or driving. Stop first when you need to check.
  • It is an independent service and is not affiliated with any government agency.
